A growing partnership
Our first service exchange took place in July 2020.
Since then, we have been working with the Kaneohe Community Garden to understand how we can pool resources for the benefit of community gardeners, developing sustainability professionals, and local residents.
Before…
This community garden plot had fallen into a completely derelict state, with garbage, broken gardening implements, and overgrown weeds.
After…
Our team came in for an afternoon and cleared debris, removed weeds, and rebuilt partitions. Here’s the finished plot, ready for the next community gardener with a fresh start!
Enchanted Gardens and their affiliate organizations are working hard to support local community gardens across Hawaii through a tactile partnership to support people and spaces which intend to foster community engagement around planting. Many community gardens are faced with perpetual challenges to ensure beds are accessible, as the capacity to weed beds can often be challenging to maintain, especially with the irregular and unpredictable patterns of gardeners taking on and giving up plots. Further, many plants, especially fruit trees, often grow incredibly well under the ideal ecological conditions of Hawaii, which can create shade hazards for the overall gardens. Finally, there is a perpetual shortage of community garden plots, creating waits for citizens to access this public amenity, oftentimes to great frustration of the public. In an attempt to address all these issues and more, we are in the process of formally partnering with community gardens to assist in land management of their sites, steward plants which have become too large for their gardens and open our doors to the overflow of eager farmers who wish to practice managing land with us. We are excited to foster this relationship further and deepen the services which we can provide for the communities of Hawaii and beyond.
